This day in Railroad History

July 27, 1988
Michael D. Dingman, chairman of the Henley Group, gave up his two-and-a-half-year battle for control of the Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corporation. Henley sold it's 16.9 percent Santa Fe stake and other interests for $1.2 billion to the Itel Corporation, which is controlled by Samuel Zell, the multimillionaire Chicago real estate executive. Mr. Zell, whose nickname has been ''Sam the Grave-Dancer'' ever since he bought thousands of distressed real estate properties in the 1970's, is a close friend of the Reichmann family of Canada, which already owns 19.6 percent of Santa Fe and has been widely identified as friendly to Santa Fe.
