This Date in Railroad History

November 5, 1932
The Southern Pacific Railroad, the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana finalized the bond financing for the Huey P. Long Bridge, (owned by the Public Belt Railroad, but mostly used by the SP). Construction contracts were signed in December 1932 and work formally started the following day. The bridge is a cantilevered steel through truss bridge that carries a two-track railroad line over the Mississippi River at mile 106.1 with two lanes of US 90 on each side of the central tracks. The widest clean span is 790 feet and sits 135 feet above the water. There are three navigation channels below the bridge, the widest being 750 feet. The distinctive rail structure is 22,996 feet long and extends as a rail viaduct well into the city.

Former Conrail GE U-23-B 2795, later CR 2206, then P&W 2204, finally East Penn 2204 has moved west to the Eastern Washington Gateway RR, operating out of Cheney WA. Is this the only U-23-B currently operational in the United States?
