The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad ran a busy schedule of steam, diesel and Budd RDC excursions on their former Reading and Central Railroad of New Jersey lines in late 2017. On October 14th the RBM&N operated a “Railfan Steam Special” from the newly opened Outer Station in Reading to Jim Thorpe, PA. This train was powered by ex-Gulf, Mobile and Northern 4-6-2 No. 425 with no diesel assistance, and was comprised of five coaches with an open gondola coupled behind the 425 for unrestricted views and photography. R&N rear platform observation/business car No. 1, the “Black Diamond”, carrying R&N officials and guests was coupled to the rear of the consist. This shot of the “Railfan Steam Special” was taken as the special excursion blasted through Nesquehoning Tunnel. Note the gon full of railfans behind the engine.
