Next stop was the former PRR station at Lewistown. The UP Special got delayed again, and we had an hour wait here. Strangely, no NS trains showed up while we waited. The only train that appeared was the east bound Pennsylvanian, seen here at the west end of the crossovers in front of the station splitting the old PRR position light signals and their replacements.
After the Pennsylvanian cleared the UP Special showed up 20 minutes later, seen here passing the old PRR station.
Inspection car Idaho splitting the PRR position light signals and their replacements at the west end of Lewistown station. From here the UP Special ran at a much faster speed, and keeping up with it on parallel U.S. Route 22 was quite a challenge.
As I rolled into the parking lot at Horseshoe Curve the UP Special was already rounding the Curve, although I drove as fast as possible from Lewistown. This shot was taken as the UP Special was passing above the visitor’s center at the Curve. As soon as I got this shot I headed up the long, steep road to the
tunnels at Gallitzin.
Shortly after arrival at Gallitzin a west bound NS autorack train showed up.
