This year’s convention of the National Railway Historical Society was held in Cumberland, MD, a mountain town in western Maryland tucked into the base of the Appalachian Mountains. The six-day convention, held August 7-12, included four rail excursions, a series of seminars covering an interesting variety of railroading subjects, several official NRHS meetings, a night photo session and the annual banquet. The first excursion of the convention was a one-way trip between Cass and Elkins WV on August 8th. Riders boarded a regularly scheduled train to Bald Knob at Cass and detrained at Old Spruce where they walked over to the diesel-powered Salamander, which took them to Elkins, WV. This is the first segment of the trip as it passed through Whittaker station on the Cass Scenic Railroad. The power for this portion of the trip was Shays Nos. 2 and 4.
