Six former New Jersey Transit passenger diesels are now working in freight service and hauling excursion trains on the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG) in Alamosa, Colorado. All six diesels are GP40FH-2s, and were rebuilt from GP40s by Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho and sold to NJT in the late 1980s. The SLRG acquired the ex-NJT diesels, Nos. 4135, 4137, 4138, 4141, 4142 and 4144, in late 2015. The San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad operates 154 miles of former Denver & Rio Grande Western lines radiating from Alamosa. It connects with the Union Pacific Railroad at Walsenburg, CO and heads west over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at La Veta Pass and into the valley of the San Luis and Rio Grande Rivers. At Alamosa, the railroad splits with a branch extending south to Antonito, just north of the New Mexico border, and northwest to South Fork. This photo was taken of former NJT GP40FH-2 No. 4142 switching grain cars at Sugar Junction in Monte Vista, CO on May 22, 2017. In the far distance is Mount Blanco, in the Rio Grande National Forest. No. 4142 began life as Milwaukee Road GP40 No. 2055, delivered in 1968. Stripped of its NTJ reporting marks but still wearing its wide orange, burgundy and blue stripes, the 49-year-old workhorse is still providing reliable service.
