This day in Railroad History

July 1, 1960
The Mower Lumber Company ended operation of its Shay powered logging line and mill at Cass, West Virginia. Mower had bought the line in 1942, cutting second-growth timber off Cheat Mountain, which had earlier been logged by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. The railroad was conveyed to a scrap company, which started to remove the tracks and equipment. However, in an unlikely turn of events, a group of local businessmen led by Pennsylvania railfan Russell Baum convinced the West Virginia state legislature to make the Cass Railroad a state park. In 1963, the first tourist excursion train left the Cass depot for Whittaker Station. Also, vintage photos of the Mower operation are available here: [www.msrlha.org]
