This day in Railroad History

July 13, 1925
The Western Pacific Railway derailed a passenger train near Shafter, Nevada, which resulted in the injury of 14 passengers and 5 dining car employees. The accident occured on a fill, The track is laid with 33 ft 85-pound rails, with about 18 to 19 untreated ties to the rail-length, and is single-spiked, the spikes being staggered. Four-hole angle bars were in use, but there were no tie-plates or rail anchors in the vicinity of the point of accident. A section gang had been working in the area prior to the accident. The ICC investigation found the accident was caused by rails kicking out under the train, due to excessive creeping, and reccommended the advisability of installing tie plates whenever conditions permit.
