This day in Railroad History

July 22, 1959
The Chicago Tunnel Company received ICC permission to abandon operation. The Chicago Tunnel Company had built and operated a narrow gauge railway freight tunnel network under the downtown of the city of Chicago. This was regulated by the Interstate Commerce Commission as an interurban despite the fact that it operated entirely under central Chicago, did not carry passengers, and was entirely underground. The railroad operated 132 electric locomotives, typically 30 to 50 horsepower each, and had 2,042 merchandise cars, 350 excavating cars and 235 coal and ash cars. In 1914, the tunnel company handled 609,320 tons of freight, 275,218 of which were merchandise. The remainder was presumably coal, ash and excavation debris. From 1912 into the 1930s, the tunnel company was managed by Sherman Weld Tracy. It was never very profitable, but it avoided receivership, with most of the stock held by J. Ogden Armour, E. H. Harriman (also CEO of the Union Pacific Railroad) and their heirs.

After spending two decades on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, a fund raising campaign titled “Fire Up 611” was created in 2013 to restore ex-Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 to operation. The huge passenger 4-8-4 was towed to the North Carolina Transportation Museum (NCTM) in Spencer in 2014, where she underwent a $1 million restoration. Following a shake-down run between Spencer and Greensboro NC and some runs around the NCTM’s oval track in late May 2015, the 611 was ready to resume excursion service. On May 30th the streamlined4-8-4 pulled a 17 car passenger consist from to Roanoke over former Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western lines. The “Welcome Home 611” trip was pursued by hundreds of chasers, and thousands of onlookers lined the tracks the entire route. This train was symboled as NS No. 957 and ran about 40 MPH.

The steam special blasts through Danville, VA on the former Southern Railway main on its 207 mile trip to Roanoke.
