This day in Railroad History

July 30, 1971
The Monon Railroad merged into the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Built as the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad, opened its 300-miles from Lake Michigan south to the Ohio River in 1853. In 1946, John W. Barriger III became president of the Monon, changed its operations, built new passenger cars, purchased new diesel F-3's for passenger and mainline freight service, and made the Monon a modern, efficient, and competitive railroad. The Monon Railroad was the first class "A" railroad to become fully dieselized. It operated entirely within the state of Indiana, having only a few miles of out-state trackage rights to connect it to its two major terminals - Chicago and Louisville, Kentucky.

The Shenandoah Valley Railroad’s Staunton to Pleasant Valley, VA turn heads north in a driving rainstorm a mile north of Staunton, VA on July 6, 2015. GP9 No. 40 has a dozen cars in tow destined for customers along the line and at Pleasant Valley. The Shenandoah Valley Railroad is a shortline which operates between Staunton and Pleasant Valley over a 20.2 mile segment of track built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the 1870s. The current operator is the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, which also operates Cass Scenic Railroad, the West Virginia Central Railroad, and the Durbin Rocket in West Virginia. The SVRR connects with CSX/Buckingham Branch RR at Staunton, and with Norfolk Southern at Pleasant Valley.
