This day in Railroad History

August 10, 1972
The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad was merged into the (largely parallel) Illinois Central Railroad to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. The Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad was a result of the reorganization of the New Orleans, Mobile & Chicago in 1917. The GM&O incorporated in 1938 to take over and merge the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which it completed in 1940. The railroad also merged with the Alton Railroad in 1947.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR operates several sessions of Engineer and Fireman School. At the summit of the grade from Chama to Cumbres, K-36 # 489 backs the school train around the wye for the run back to Chama. On this delightful morning the K-36 has 3 flat cars , three gondolas and a caboose in tow. What's not to enjoy at an elevation of over 10000 ft ?
