This day in Railroad History

August 25, 1959
The new Arthur Kill Railroad Lift Bridge, which was built about 500 feet north of the Goethals Bridge (I-278), opened to rail traffic on August 25, 1959. Its 559-foot-long main lift span remains the longest of its type in the world. The bridge was built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad after a ship bound for the nearby Esso Bayway refinery struck the center pivot pier of the earlier swing span bridge and damaged the bridge beyond repair. The original bridge, a 500-foot-long, steam-powered swing span, was the first fixed link between Staten Island and the mainland United States.

This year’s convention of the National Railway Historical Society ran June 13-21, and was based in Rutland, Vermont, a very old and historic city in the western part of the state which is at the junction of four rail lines. The convention featured excursions over all four lines, three of which are mostly freight-only and provided “new mileage” for serious mileage collectors.

An all-day, 106 mile roundtrip excursion was run between Rutland and Bellows Falls, Vermont on June 16th. The trip ran over the former Green Mountain Railroad, an all-freight line now part of the Vermont Rail System. The passenger special was comprised of 12 historic cars and was powered by former Green Mountain Railroad GP40 No. 304 and Vermont Rail System GP40 No. 301. This photo was taken at the runby on the return trip at milepost 45.9, near east Clarendon, Vermont.
